What if reincarnation were real? What if you could look back from the present to your past lives, but also see forward from the past? What if you could repay the karmic debts you left owing in your past lives? Nine Lives: A Soul’s Journey by Nav Pallav is a fascinating tale of how Raj Ishwar Prasad, a historian and archivist living in the Indian tech-city of Bengaluru, faces challenges from the typical villains of the day. There are greedy developers, loutish politicians, drug dealers, and corporate rivals, but he gets the feeling he has met them before. Not only is he remembering his past lives, but he must also find a way to pay off his unpaid karmic debts from those lives. It’s possible to learn from the post, but can his past selves also learn from the future?
Playing out the Hindu beliefs of the cosmic cycle of reincarnation and karma in a contemporary setting, Nine Lives mixes mystical belief and high adventure. As Raj and his tech-genius sister struggle to save their family, he must also grapple with philosophical and ethical choices. Nav Pallav writes with imagination and flair, bringing to life not only contemporary Bengaluru but also episodes from the past. The descriptions of life and conflicts in prehistoric times, in the days of the Mauryan empire, the Chola kings, the Mughals, and in British India are told realistically and have the ring of historical truth. This fast-paced and engrossing story will leave the reader with some deep mystical truths to ponder. Highly recommended.
