In Nothing to Lose by Michael Garrett, Ken Baxter hires an assassin to kill his wife, but as they plan how the assassin will execute the plan, things go sour, and the assassin ends up killing Ken. Larrisa Baxter is accused of the murder. The Baxters are a powerful family and have never loved Larrisa; this seemed like an opportunity to exact revenge on her. Even her lawyer admits how difficult the case will be. Derrick had just arrived in Arizona when he heard about the case. He knew Larrisa’s father and how concerned he was for his daughter's safety because he did not trust the Baxters. Derrick comes up with a plan to help her. He approaches Larrisa with the plan, and after a confrontation, she agrees to it. The plan is to help Larrissa escape and start a new life elsewhere. Since she didn’t know Derrick, she suggested going to his home in Alabama to gauge his intentions. As they spend time together, Derrick starts to realize the flaws in his plan, like how she would be able to survive independently. He is also hiding something about his health. How will things turn out?
With highly engaging dialogues and perfect narration, there was never a dull moment in Nothing to Lose by Michael Garrett. Once I started reading it, there was no putting it down, as the flawlessly flowing plot got me hooked with unexpected directions and moral dilemmas. The work covers themes that will resonate with many readers, such as kindness and fighting for the right thing. I also loved the well-developed characters who helped to bring the story to life and the vivid descriptions of events and places, which created a mental picture of what was happening. Michael utilized suspense to great effect. The reader will also appreciate the easy-to-understand language, which makes the work accessible to all audiences. This was an amazing story, and I look forward to reading something else by Michael Garrett.
