In Réal Carpentier’s Supreme Sacrifice, Earth is governed by AGIE, an artificial intelligence whose edicts have replaced national governments. A prism implanted in every citizen’s eye transmits what they see, while the system can inflict pain as punishment. Jude Beckham, a retired army general who teaches meditation, remembers a time when people could make their own decisions. The death of his first wife under AGIE’s rule left him yearning for that world. When Jude has an extraordinary experience during meditation, he begins investigating a possible weakness in the government’s surveillance. His friendship with Dario Medina, a former intelligence officer, offers a possible path toward finding allies. Now, as Jude contemplates launching a covert rebellion, he must determine who is safe to trust in a world where even an innocent inquiry can be lethal.

Réal Carpentier’s Supreme Sacrifice shows how quickly people learn to police themselves. The rebellion is well done, with Jude’s studio becoming a place where the most dangerous conversations can happen. What I love about Jude and Dario's friendship is that the hope they have for a different world is matched by their understanding of the price to be paid. When Jude first asks for help, Dario thinks about the enormity of the idea before lending a hand. That thoughtful trait is exactly what the rebellion will need later on. Dario talks about rebuilding communities through people’s existing skills, which is a natural concern for a person determined to give humanity back its future. Sophisticated prose brings the settings to life, from a peaceful riverbank with a towering oak overlooking the water, to winter mail routes where snow crunches underfoot and white-covered trees stand against the cold. Well-written and imaginative, readers who enjoy high-spec dystopian novels will adore this.
