On My Way Home is a heartwarming children's picture book written by Shelba Oberto and illustrated by Olena Vecchia Pittura. The story follows Kasey as she grows from a playful young girl into a woman with grandchildren. It depicts her at every stage of her life, as she repeatedly tells different people that she is on her way home. Kasey begins her journey as an innocent baby in her mother’s arms. A few years later, she skips through her neighborhood, meeting a kind neighbor who teaches her about love. She grows into a teenager who enjoys various activities in school and learns a secret hand-squeezing gesture that means "I love you." As an adult, she falls in love, gets married, and becomes a parent. Even in her old age, Kasey remembers the special hand squeeze and eventually finds her way to her final home in heaven.
On My Way Home is a beautiful story that reflects on the many stages we all experience—from childhood innocence and high school adventures to college, marriage, parenthood, and the gentle farewell that comes with aging and passing. Kasey’s story emphasizes the importance of love, faith, and family, with cherished moments like the gentle hand squeezes symbolizing the unspoken love and bond she shares with her loved ones. The narrative also explores the reassurance of eternal life through faith in God. The story encourages us to embrace life's transitions with gratitude and trust, knowing that, like Kasey, we are all continuously moving toward our final home with God, where love and reunion await. Shelba Oberto does an excellent job of conveying the message through a story that children can relate to. She uses simple language and relatable scenarios that will resonate with readers. The colorful illustrations beautifully complement the story and bring the characters to life. I love that the art is vibrant and realistic, as this captures children's attention. Overall, this is a comforting reflection on life's transitions, inspiring gratitude, faith, and anticipation of reunion in the divine home beyond this world.
