Operation Crimsonfeather by Saya J.B. follows Grael and Pylen, tasked with delivering a Crimsonfeather chicken to the palace for Governor Ulmoth’s Ascension ceremony. When complications arise, such as the bird being alive and designated a protected Imperial heritage asset, they orchestrate a covert operation, evading Imperial authorities, criminal factions like the Black Feather Cartel, and lockdowns. Alongside a sentient hover-rickshaw, they stumble through underground refuges, smuggling networks, and hostile face-offs. The Crimsonfeather, revealed to be so much more than anyone could have imagined, drives the mission to expose corruption linked to Governor Ulmoth by transmitting incriminating data. Grael, Pylen, and their allies race against time and enemies to deliver critical evidence, all while managing shifting alliances and escalating threats within and beyond Xandrel Major.

Operation Crimsonfeather by Saya J.B. is an unbelievably wild ride, narrated through a close third-person point of view that is remarkably intelligent, witty, and tightly in alignment with the protagonists’ experiences and decisions. Naturally, this includes the chicken. Pylen, Grael, and the Crimsonfeather itself shape the direction and tone of the plot, while the settings, especially the cinematic underground refuge beneath Veil City, with its multi-tiered structures and glowing tubes, act almost as additional characters. These anchored the story’s atmosphere and drew me directly into the environment. The character development is consistent, revealing practical skills and motivations that justify choices as the fast-paced events escalate. Again, this includes the chicken! Saya J.B. excels at packing a huge punch in a plot with a rapid progression and a compact word count. Overall, this is a brilliant read for those who appreciate zany, thoughtful, and inventive science fiction adventures.
