In 1921, Idaho saw the longest, most sensational trial in its history: the trial of Lyda Trueblood, the infamous “Flypaper Murderess” and Idaho’s own “Lady Bluebeard.” Much like a spider draws flies into its web, Lyda had a knack for charming a new husband, getting him to take out a life insurance policy with her as the sole beneficiary…and then tragically losing said new husband to “illness.” She also had a penchant for buying bulk amounts of poisonous flypaper. It wasn’t until the death of her fourth husband in 1920 that authorities were finally able to bring Lyda to justice. Ordinary Wife by Gregg and Morgan Olsen spans Lyda Trueblood’s upbringing, her short-lived marriages, her trial, conviction, and daring escape from prison. It’s a thorough and immaculately researched deep dive into one of the most iconic true crime cases of the 1920s.

I was only a little familiar with Lyda Trueblood’s story when I picked up this book, but as a true crime reader, I was thrilled to have learned so much more about her life! The research Gregg and Morgan Olsen have done here is incredible. Through newspaper articles, courtroom reporting, prison records, and statements from both Lyda and those who knew her, this book offers a very complete and detailed narrative. Her trial made history, and the media frenzy that rose up around it was like nothing else at the time. The pacing is perfect; it really captures the tension surrounding the trial as Lyda’s sentencing date grew closer. I recommend Ordinary Wife to any true crime fans looking for their next read. It’s a compelling book detailing the life of a truly cold and calculating killer.
