Our Guardian Renegade by Harley Zed Mona is the story of a motley crew of characters in a world called Senia, tasked with the job of protecting those who cannot protect themselves when on the cusp of an imminent and deadly war. Outside of the sanctuary cities of White Heart and Avalon, the descent of the Borderlands into anarchy and brute violence has destroyed any remnants of civilization. When Avalon makes a frightening declaration that only one of the two safe havens should exist, it's left to Amber Leavett to assemble a crew of Guardians who might offer salvation in the last places it may ever exist.
Our Guardian Renegade is the ultimate in ensemble character driven arcs, with so many complementary and clashing personalities that Harley Zed Mona could easily launch a whole series of spin-off novels and never come anywhere close to running out of material. Wildly creative and with non-stop action, there are fight scenes and romances galore, all encapsulated in a well developed world that pops from the page. The narrative is occasionally loquacious, but is balanced nicely by punchy dialogue, intelligent sarcasm, and enough self-deprecating humor to humanize a crew that accomplishes feats that make them feel far from human. While it's evident that this novel was written by a gamer for gamers, I suspect this book and all that follows will find a wide readership with lovers of the superhero and fantasy genres. All in all, this is a thoroughly engrossing read that I look forward to seeing branched out as the Guardians and the world of Senia continue to evolve.
