As a young boy, Toby’s dearest ambition was to become a garbage man (because he thought they only worked on Thursdays).

Since then, he has had many jobs, including: award-winning journalist, youth theater director, dragon tamer and (for nearly 20 years) a classroom teacher at elementary and middle schools, where he became inspired by Carol Dweck’s work on growth mindset.

Toby is the author of the popular Fearless Growth Mindset series of books and is passionate about helping children become more confident, resilient and willing to try new things.

He met his wife in London and is the proud father of twin girls. One day, he would like to visit the moon.

Every child must learn that not everything will go the way they want. Fearless Growth Mindset Short Stories for Boys by Toby Sparrow is a collection of short stories introducing readers to boys who face all kinds of challenges. It begins with Leo, who believes he’s the most talented artist at his school. His spirit is crushed when he waits until the last minute to work on a special piece and loses a contest. Along the way, he begins to understand what being the best really means. Then there’s Benji, who loves playing soccer. He’s used to getting praise for his skills, but learns the hard way that talent isn’t enough. The other boys face their own struggles but share lessons about resilience, mistakes, trying something new, and more. Each chapter ends with questions and simple activities to help readers reflect. What would you do if you were in their shoes?

I read the version of this book for girls, and after finishing Fearless Growth Mindset Short Stories for Boys by Toby Sparrow, I’m equally impressed with it. I could actually relate to Leo a little bit. Watching him experience so much disappointment was genuinely heartbreaking. Each story explores a different struggle while reinforcing the overall message that mistakes can help us grow. As a teacher, I would read one chapter a day. Then, as a class, I’d talk to my students about what the lesson taught them. I’d follow up with an activity like writing about a challenge they've faced or setting a personal goal inspired by one of the characters. The illustrations by River Quaggy Studios give each story personality and help young readers connect with the boys and their experiences. Anyone looking for realistic books about kids overcoming everyday challenges and growing stronger through persistence will want to pick this one up. I think Michael Jordan’s words, "I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed," match the focus of this book. It's a message that belongs in homes, classrooms, and school libraries alike.

Fearless Growth Mindset Short Stories for Boys by Toby Sparrow is a unique collection of stories for the purpose of inspiring young boys, ages 7 to 11, to be more confident and to help them overcome fears. The lessons in this book are cleverly woven into exciting stories about the kinds of things young boys enjoy doing, like riding bikes, playing video games, artistic talents, playing sports, singing in a rock band, helping animals, competing against others at camp, and much more. Each story homes in on one young boy’s fear of something and shows how he eventually learns to overcome that fear.

I was highly impressed with the author’s ability to pack so much into each story. Each of the stories feels perfectly put together, with a plot that is just detailed enough to take the reader on a complete journey. Each story follows the young protagonists from failure to success. The stories all include humor and many exciting action scenes, exactly the kind of elements needed to keep young minds engaged. Author Toby Sparrow was intentionally trying to appeal to as many boys as possible by writing about a variety of hobbies and interests. I also noticed that he did a fantastic job of using the lingo and intricacies of each story topic to make his stories feel as realistic as possible. I recommend this book to any boy dealing with fears in life. I would also recommend that parents of young boys keep a copy of Fearless Growth Mindset Short Stories for Boys close at hand as their sons navigate the normal challenges of life.

Fearless Growth Mindset: Short Stories for Boys is a collection of eight short, inspirational stories by Toby Sparrow. Leo is a cartoonist who often goes unnoticed by his peers and friends. After failing to put in the effort to win a school competition, Leo gets a second chance to make his dreams come true. The star soccer player at Allerton Academy, Benji, learns to work on his weaknesses instead of resting on his laurels. Larry dreams of becoming a marine biologist. But when he makes a mistake while trying to save a puffin's life, he begins to doubt himself until his mother reassures him. Young Alfie is a great mountain biker. After he gets the opportunity to participate in the regional championship, Alfie soon learns to face the challenges head-on.

Fearless Growth Mindset: Short Stories for Boys is exactly what the title implies. Toby Sparrow has crafted an absorbing collection of tales with key life lessons embedded in them for young boys. I think young teenagers and preteen boys will find the protagonists in these stories very relatable. Every single story in this collection has a unique theme related to the life skills necessary to succeed. At the end of each story, readers will find a practically applicable mindset message, reflection questions, and a challenge to help them understand the key message of the narrative. To me, this book is an absolute gem. It will entertain readers while educating them on things like the benefits of effort, working on weaknesses, learning from mistakes, how to navigate unexpected challenges, and much more. Highly recommended.

These short stories show that everyone can face obstacles in life, but it is through these that we learn to grow and become a better version of what we wish to be.

Fearless Growth Mindset Short Stories for Boys by Toby Sparrow encourages readers to reflect on the choices they make and how the lessons apply to their own lives. These stories could help children step outside their comfort zones as they develop a stronger mindset with the different lessons each story offers. The mindset message, reflection questions, and mini challenges helped me internalize and remember every lesson I learned. The illustrations were as whimsical and as fun as the stories they told. The characters were relatable, and the plot of each story was straightforward but filled with opportunities to learn and grow. Of all the stories, my favorite is I Learn From Feedback, Not Just Praise. Benji is strong, talented, and overly confident. He thought winning and talent were everything, but learned the hard way that he wasn't perfect and learned to improve on his weaknesses and his attitude. Each story contains relatable scenarios and hidden nuggets of wisdom waiting to be discovered.
