Panda My Bear by Leigha Huggins is a companion book to her Love Lottery title. It is written so that kids can understand that feeling of unconditional love. Panda My Bear is a sweet simple book about a well-loved stuffed panda. The little boy in the story is given the panda and from then on, they are inseparable. His love is demonstrated by the care he takes of the panda and even when the panda becomes worn, he continues to love him just the same. The story ends with the two of them cuddled in for a good night’s sleep.
Unconditional love is what Panda My Bear represents. Children will immediately identify with the story because almost all kids have a beloved stuffed animal. They will hug their own stuffies tight as they listen to this tale. In the many years that I did Storytime, I read to hundreds of kids and their stuffed animals. Panda My Bear would make an ideal book to read for a Teddy Bear Storytime! Melanie Darling’s endearing illustrations, especially of the slightly bedraggled but well-loved panda, set just the right tone. The simple text lends itself to kids being able to read the book for themselves. Children’s stories don’t always have to be long and complicated to tell a complete story. Panda My Bear gets its message across in a small tidy package, which is just perfect for little ears. It’s time for everyone to grab their favorite stuffie, a cozy blanket, and settle in to listen to Panda My Bear by Leigha Huggins.
