In Picasso's Hidden Legacy by Beatrix Koch, Marilyn Hendrickson, a New York art historian, time-travels back to 1925 Antibes with Boris Latsky, a brilliant scientist and her longtime partner. The goal? To persuade Pablo Picasso to paint one hundred secret works that would be buried and “discovered” decades later. When Marilyn forms a relationship with Picasso and begins to value him over the plan, Boris intervenes. A mysterious collapse leaves Marilyn missing nearly a year of her life, and she becomes the public authority on a sensational Picasso discovery she cannot remember helping create. As fragments of lost time surface, Marilyn confronts the possibility that history itself has been shaped by design and that her own past holds consequences she has yet to face.

Picasso's Hidden Legacy by Beatrix Koch offers a unique premise and a plot with so many levels that it's amazing how it all comes together perfectly in the end. Time travel is a tough nut to crack, but Koch's mechanics inside a sealed Antibes villa click into place, with the cross-checking of hotel registers, letters to the poet, Éluard, and period-specific studio practices of 1920s France. I love that we get to meet Picasso, not as a distant legend but as a working artist, and see how he handles the new foreknowledge of Cubism’s future, Warhol’s rise, and the market valuation of his own name. The storyline transitions between then and now, juggling the year of memory lost and Marilyn and the new Picassos. With excellent prose, some romance, and a lot of art, this is a novel worth settling down with.
