Dan Gold’s Game Changers: The Daily Reader brings together a year of true sporting accounts that invite teenagers to consider how the choices made by athletes relate to their own lives. As a fifteen-year-old baseball prospect in Japan, Shohei Ohtani draws up a chart of the habits he believes will help him become a professional player. In another, American tennis player Jim Courier faces a difficult choice when his opponent Pete Sampras becomes distressed during an Australian Open match. For each episode, Gold looks at the everyday circumstances behind the sporting moment, then draws a lesson aimed at young readers. Every account finishes with a practical takeaway inviting teenagers to try the idea in their own lives. The entries can be read individually, giving the collection the appeal of a daily companion throughout the year.
Dan Gold’s Game Changers: The Daily Reader is a wonderful collection of stories, with really practical exercises, and each one offering something useful for teenagers to try. His explanation of golfer Jack Nicklaus’s method of picturing a shot is one of my favorites, and the accompanying activity is excellent. I loved the way Gold invites readers to write down a goal, then work backward until they have a task they can begin that day. Baseball catcher Yadier Molina’s story is another favorite, and Gold’s description of his patient approach is beautifully done. His account of Molina listening to a rattled pitcher leads into an exercise asking readers to let someone finish speaking before responding. The exercises invite readers to participate in each lesson, making this a fantastic book to revisit throughout the year. Well-written and thoughtful, young sports fans will adore this.
