Ksenia Ivanova’s Pink Slippers and Other Bad Decisions drops you into Kaya’s rollercoaster of life as an immigrant in Israel. From settling in a small town to navigating low-paying cleaning jobs, disorderly clients, and impossible bosses, Kaya's days are a non-stop mix of survival. On top of that, her romantic life is equally complex. Flings with her first boss, Adam, and later with Azro, a Belarusian-Israeli construction worker, bring as much heartbreak and frustration as they bring tenderness. Kaya is constantly juggling physical exhaustion and financial stress, all while trying to hold onto her dignity. You will read as she scrapes through filthy houses, dodges awful colleagues, and figures out when to walk away from all the chaos happening around her. Will Kaya ever find a place where life makes even a little sense?

Ksenia Ivanova’s memoir-esque dark comedy is a brutally honest and hilarious ride through immigrant life and survival. The comedic drama never really slows down. One moment has Kaya in a cockroach-infested apartment, and the next has her wrestling with bureaucracy or a disastrous date. Kaya’s humor is sharp, biting, and very human, especially when she is talking through the ridiculousness of cleaning a rabbi’s home or enduring the impossible demands of others. Relationships are very complicated in this book. Adam’s charm and Azro’s stubborn tenderness clash with her own independence in ways that are funny but painfully genuine. The glimpses of Kaya’s coworkers and her tiny apartment make her story feel even more authentic. For readers craving dark humor and a protagonist who refuses to break, Pink Slippers and Other Bad Decisions is a very entertaining read. Take my word for it.
