Piojos: The Little Spectacled Bear by Monica Vidalón is a picture book about a cub named Piojos. This spectacled bear has brown and cream fur, wears red glasses, and lives in the Peruvian Andes. He’s known for seeing the smallest details, like a tiny flower growing between rocks. Piojos is also very caring, and most of the time, others really appreciate that. But one day, he hears someone talking about him. Whatever they said makes Piojos sad and full of doubts. So, he goes for a walk to think. As he is walking along, he spots a puma. Scared, he tries to hide. However, after taking a closer look, he realizes the animal is hurt. He isn't sure what to do next. Will Piojos listen to his fear or his heart? What would you do?

Piojos by Monica Vidalón was a cute story that shared an important message. Young learners will absolutely love the little bear and find the book easy to understand. From an educator’s perspective, this would be a good read-aloud in preschool or kindergarten classrooms. Teachers could talk to kids about emotions, empathy, kindness, or even South America (since it takes place in Peru). Students might also enjoy drawing Piojos or researching different bears. The artwork is bright, and the young cub steals the show. One small detail that caught my attention was the emphasis on "ojo" in the title. It's a clever reference to the Spanish word for "eyes" and fits Piojos' glasses perfectly. He's easy to like and even easier to root for. Anyone looking for stories about animals, friendship, and understanding others will want to pick this one up. Dolly Parton once said, "Find out who you are, and do it on purpose." That message fits Piojos's journey perfectly.
