Pleasures of Promise Lake by Marti Shane is a sizzling romance novel with sincerity and heart. The main character, Sam, could really use a respite at her childhood safe space, Promise Lake, after losing Gram, but a tragic accident throws her into Jake's arms; Gram's best friend. But what's a rule-keeper such as herself to do when the rulebreaker Jake wants to push boundaries? Her rules are simple: don't date clients or your ex's best friend. There is a palpable attraction between the two, and yes, he saved her life, but is that enough for Sam to break her own rules and have that once-in-a-lifetime romance? He wants her, but she might walk away if he tries too hard.
Marti Shane writes this intriguing and sensual romance novel with a talent for plot-building and character development. It isn't your typical romance story since it has a thread of serious drama running through it, but this is what I liked about it. You really feel for Sam and her situation. When the possibility of a relationship with Jake comes into play, you ride the wave with her and with Jake too. I like Shane's descriptions: they bring you inside the characters' heads, and the narration is good. The pace is steady, and the author doesn't give you the whole story upfront. It unfolds in its own time. The emotions and heated dialogue help move the story along to its conclusion, and, oh, the sizzle is great too. If you like a realistic romance novel with strong leads, dynamic supporting characters, and an unpredictable, unique plot, you'll love Pleasures of Promise Lake by Marti Shane.
