Potion, a contemporary retelling of a classic fairy tale, by Dorlana Vann tells the story of one teenager who is finally given the chance to fit in. Melrose has accepted that she is not pretty or popular, but three new girls at school seem interested in befriending her. Her brother, Lucas, gets the feeling that something is wrong here, and he can't shake the feeling that these three girls are somehow related to the traumatic event that he and Melrose survived as children. It's pretty clear that witchcraft is involved, and Lucas has to find a way to once again protect his sister and uncover the truth about what happened to them eight years ago. The clock is ticking, and time is running out before the potion and the spell are complete.

This unique and up-to-date retelling of Hansel and Gretel unfolds throughout the pages of Potion, set among modern teenagers in high school as they navigate the everyday problems of teen lives. Dorlana Vann has brought together an enjoyable cast of characters that are fun to both love and hate. When witches enter the picture, nothing is the way it seems, and learning who to trust is a tough lesson that I loved learning along with Lucas and Melrose. Other themes of friendship, family, and betrayal also take center stage, and I love when a book that reads so easily has such hidden moral lessons and things to think about. I look forward to reading more from this engaging author.
