Author Biography

Desiree Goldey is the founder and CEO of Do Better Consulting, an Austin-based talent strategy and career advisory firm serving founders, talent leaders, and senior professionals. She has spent over 25 years in business across sales, marketing, hospitality, consumer goods, and recruiting, long enough to see that most leadership problems are self-awareness problems in disguise.

She is a certified coach, co-host of the Talentless podcast on the WRKdefined network, and has spoken at RecFest and HR Tech. Leadership Is a Practice, Not a Personality is her first solo book. She was previously a contributing author to the anthology A Message to My Family: I Am Here and You Are My Legacy.

Desiree wrote this book because she kept watching organizations promote people for confidence and charisma, then act surprised when those leaders couldn’t see their own impact on the people around them. People treat self-awareness as a soft skill, or a trait you either have or you don’t. She doesn’t buy it. It’s a practice, built through deliberate habits: noticing, reflecting, empathizing, including, mentoring, and leading. The book lays out that work plainly for anyone who leads people and wants to do it better.

She is direct with every leader she works with. This book is no different.

Leadership is a Practice, Not a Personality by Desiree Goldey is a well-written book that will inspire leaders at all levels to be intentional about their growth as well as equip them with the necessary tools to work differently. She begins by exploring leadership as a practice that begins with self-awareness. She also explores the concept of emotional intelligence and its elements, such as empathy, self-regulation, and motivation, while also distinguishing between mentorship and sponsorship, authority and influence, and attributes of inclusive leaders. This book also provides leaders with a glimpse into what it will take to create an environment that is inclusive for all, which is simplified using the acronym DEIB. It also describes the different layers in which DEIB is implemented, such as systems, structures, and behaviors.

Sincerely, I could not get enough of this book. In fact, it transformed my perspective on what true leadership is about while allowing me time to reflect and critically evaluate myself. I was fascinated by how authentic and honest the author's writing was, as it doesn’t sell the idea of a perfect leader. From the many benefits I derived from this book, it taught me that leadership is a responsibility that extends beyond my immediate organization. I commend Goldey for sharing her personal experience and journey, which made this book relatable. I loved the exercises, reflection questions, and key takeaways, which made this book more engaging, inspiring, and practical. The writing is clear, organized, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. Themes featured include self-awareness, empathy, inclusion, discipline, mentorship, and more. I recommend Leadership is a Practice, Not a Personality by Desiree Goldey to managers, team leads, HR departments, and those interested in either personal or organizational growth.

Leadership Is a Practice, Not a Personality by Desiree Goldey takes a hard look at why our workplaces are utterly obsessed with flashy, charismatic managers, and argues that real management growth requires looking in the mirror and treating people fairly. Goldey shares her own path as a Black woman working in corporate environments built for a different demographic, showing how normal company habits reward people who blend in while forcing everyone else to wear a mask simply to get by. Using her own experiences and practical worksheets, she shows how unchecked daily stress quickly turns into bad management habits that erode team trust and send your best people straight to the exit. By sorting out your own internal triggers before fixing structural issues and broken interviewing methods, she maps out a realistic path to true psychological safety. This book marks a major turning point by moving teams past forced agreement into genuine partnership, pushing organizations to stop treating diversity goals like an empty marketing campaign.

Leadership Is a Practice, Not a Personality by Desiree Goldey is a great business management guide that avoids predictable, shallow marketing buzzwords you usually find in corporate books. What makes Goldey’s book so relatable is how she shows that everyday empathy and fair hiring are actually essential for running a successful business. She takes the abstract idea of company culture and turns it into simple daily decisions, giving you clear ways to check your team dynamics and stop bias before it starts. Her breakdown of the unspoken rules inside closed company networks is very eye-opening, showing how informal favoritism quietly breaks a company’s written promises. If you’re trying to build a workplace where different types of people can actually do great work without hiding who they are, this guide gives you a fantastic roadmap for real cultural change. Very highly recommended.

Did you know that self-awareness is key to acquiring leadership skills? To become true leaders, we must understand our own strengths and weaknesses. With this book, drawing on her own personal experiences and sharing her very own leadership journey, author Desiree Goldey offers a practical guide that focuses on the fundamental facets of leadership. In Leadership Is a Practice, Not a Personality, she explores the five core elements of emotional intelligence and shows how they influence leadership. The book further delves into the role of accountability in leadership, how empathy and integrity are key to leading, and how relational leadership works inside systems. Readers will also learn about carrying their own weight while leading, navigating external pressure and stress, building psychological safety without losing standards, the dynamics of mentorship and sponsorship, the three layers of DEIB, and much more.

One of the best things about this book for me was author Desiree Goldey's commitment to constantly highlight the importance of empathy and integrity in leadership. Leadership Is a Practice, Not a Personality isn't some step-by-step self-help guide that gives you the blueprint for leadership. Instead, Goldey uses personal anecdotes and case studies to emphasize how good leaders strive to build core human values and always lead by example. You will find tools and exercises that make sure you understand the practical applications of the concepts discussed here. I really liked Goldey's approach to the book as well as her insights and observations. Overall, this guide will help all those who are trying to enhance their leadership skill set. Highly recommended.
