“And they lived happily ever after…” is the typical ending to fairy tales, but do they? Puss in… Socks by The Rizzas narrates the not-so-happily-ever-after life of the famous Puss in Boots, and, for starters, his name is Alfie. After Alfie’s owner marries the princess and becomes king, he becomes a terror, with endless demands and growing tantrums. It gets so bad that Alfie is relieved when night comes because he can remove his boots, air his paws, and escape into the Book of Lost Tales—literally. Inside this secret magical place, Alfie is happy and free to be himself, until morning, when he returns to the palace. One day, Alfie decides to remain in the Book of Lost Tales to teach the spoiled king a lesson. But when a beloved character stays too long in the Book of Lost Tales, their story disappears…
Puss in… Socks is such a creative, entertaining, and educational sequel to Puss in Boots. The story was simple but engaging, and it taught a good lesson about gratitude. The text was easy to read, with bold fonts and impressive end rhymes. I particularly liked the story's magical element, especially the Book of Lost Tales, which featured several other famous magical characters taking a break from their usual roles, like dancing wolves and singing dragons. The Book of Lost Tales also added a mild sense of suspense. I liked the beautiful illustrations, which brought the story to life. The images, also by The Rizzas, were warm, colorful, and expressive. I enjoyed this little book and would be happy to read other books in the Wonky Tales series.
