Unmapped, collated by Lizbeth Meredith, is a travel memoir anthology in which women recount solo trips taken when their lives are changing. Anu Verma leaves home after a relationship ends and spends four months moving through Asia on thirty-six flights, discovering how it feels to make every next decision herself. Brittany Boatwright flies from Tennessee to Los Angeles for a concert, worried about traveling as a plus-size woman until the trip changes what she believes she can do alone. Linda Moore Kurth heads to Iceland to witness Keiko, the famous orca from Free Willy, return to his home waters, finding unexpected companionship among fellow travelers along the way. Across the collection, each journey begins with a woman stepping beyond familiar routines and learning what is possible once the itinerary belongs to her.

Lizbeth Meredith’s Unmapped is an exceptional memoir collection, and I loved how easily the contributors make very different journeys feel close to the reader. There were two standouts that I loved the most. First is Kim Sorrelle’s time in Haiti. Trust me when I say I was on the verge of tears when Mirlande, a mother who lost her child in the earthquake, placed a mango in her hand and told her to think about what she can still do with what she has left. That is a story that will stay with me for a long, long time. The second is Wanda Malhotra, who shares how she sat down to a simple hotel meal with sparkling wine in Nuremberg, after her suitcase disappeared, determined to make the last part of a difficult day end on a lovely note. So much of this book succeeds through details that let each woman speak for herself, and through their voices there is plenty to inspire and absorb. Universally well written and uplifting, readers who enjoy travel memoirs about women claiming time for themselves will adore this, as I have.
