In Ileen Martin’s Quantum Crush, eighteen-year-old Jessica Sandoval is finishing high school in futuristic Tampa, where a government time-travel program promises to prevent an asteroid disaster. Jess, who plans to go to medical school, seems to be finding her long-time friendship with David Michaels more and more romantic. David, a young mechanic, believes extraterrestrials visited him as a child, something Jess finds hard to reconcile with her Christian faith. His relationship with another girl makes her feelings increasingly difficult to handle. Then Jess gets Triton, a lifelike holographic companion whose interest in her becomes frighteningly possessive. Strange things start happening at home that threaten its security, prompting questions about the potential overreach of tech. As graduation approaches, Jess finds herself facing dangers she could never have imagined.
Ileen Martin’s Quantum Crush is a totally delightful YA science-fiction romance, with a central relationship that becomes especially meaningful when danger arrives. Jess is such a fantastic heroine, with courage behind her fierce loyalty. David is approached by a stranger after a game of bowling, and Jess's impulsive response demonstrates how sure-footed she is in critical moments. The care David shows for Jess adds a sweetness to their interactions, even as everything around them begins to deteriorate. The mystery is another highlight, with extraordinary inventions pointing toward some seriously disturbing possibilities. A visit to an Atlantean executive’s estate takes the couple into a guarded underground facility, where a classified archive offers a possible route to discovering what happened to someone's missing parents. If you’re craving a YA romance with a sci-fi mystery, definitely put this one on your reading list.
