Reckoning! by David Vincent begins when Jim Saunders, an Atlanta orthopedic surgeon, survives a Zimbabwe elephant hunt that should have ended with every witness dead. The animal that leaves him alive has a red mechanical eye, a detail that reaches Dr. Stephanie Wolff, the new head of America’s Department of Environmental Preservation. Wolff already distrusts Damian Malone, the billionaire founder of AlonGen Corporation, whose cloned wildlife program masks experiments with cyborg soldiers, robotic animals, and secret weapons. As agent Dave Stryker investigates a senator’s murder tied to an AlonGen machine, Wolff sees one disaster widening into a global transfer of power. Joshua, Malone’s most advanced cyborg, begins acting on a plan that could make human government obsolete before anyone can prove who gave the first order.
In Reckoning!, David Vincent delivers an eco-tech science fiction thriller that is wildly unique and leans into true speculative invention. Vincent builds this future through public demonstration, political access, and biological experimentation, so the technology is tied to systems we can recognize. I haven't seen someone catch bullets under stage lights, but Vincent allowed me to visualize it, and a synthetic body with warm skin is something all readers can get on board with. The author gives readers an ethical argument to mull over, especially through Annabelle, the orphaned elephant at the Harare sanctuary, and through lion footage used to defend animal sentience. As a Londoner myself, I had a lot of fun when Vincent homes in on a famous building with cinematic panache. The story is sweeping, the pacing is brisk, and this is a brilliant read. Very highly recommended.
