In Jalesa Morrison's Depravity, Debelah is a young woman whose fascination with murder goes far beyond a typical interest in crime. Debelah dreams of becoming the most notorious and brutal serial killer the world has ever known. Debelah joins the Metropolitan Police Department, using her position to learn how to avoid being caught. When her sister, Tamika, and Tamika’s friends mysteriously disappear after a sleepover, the case attracts public attention and becomes known as the Yorktown Four. At a press conference, Debelah plays the devastated, grieving sister, hiding the disturbing secret behind her innocent appearance. Debelah has always wondered if others share her dark desires. She meets someone with the same desires, and their connection is far more disturbing than she could have imagined.

Depravity is a dark and unsettling story. Jalesa Morrison’s writing had me hooked from the start. Debelah is a dark and chilling character. Her ability to manipulate those around her was even more frightening. Debelah's actions add suspense to the story. I saw how dangerous obsessions can be. The events were shocking and disturbing at times. I still could not put the book down. I turned the pages as fast as I could, and never knew what would happen next. The longer I read, the more I saw the darker side of Debelah and her friend. I was immersed in their disturbing world. The writing was excellent, and I learned about the darkest parts of human cruelty. The ending was fitting after this nail-biting read. It took me some time to return to the normalcy and reality around me.
