Justine and Becca, mother and daughter, have been close for the past nine years. Becca is the eldest daughter, and her mother expected her to help raise her two younger sisters. However, by her teenage years, Becca began to feel as if her mother was taking advantage of her, relying on her to take care of her sisters all the time. By the time Becca headed for college, the two women were barely speaking. In Regret No More by Wendy Haller, Becca is called home to help the family deal with a new challenge. Justine has found out she has breast cancer, and Becca wants to be there for her. But how does she close the gap between them that has existed for so long?

Regret No More by Wendy Haller paints a heartwarming story of the fractious relationship between a mother and her eldest daughter. We experience Justine’s feelings of vulnerability, not wanting others to see her as weak but as the strong person she continually fights to portray. At the same time, we see Becca in the same way, as if the two characters are each side of the same coin. Haller’s characters are both prickly and endearing, as they come to realize their roles have changed. Haller helps us appreciate the difficulty of transition, as her characters try to move from estrangement to a place of sharing and serenity. She sets the tone for the next chapter in the sisters' lives because, as she reiterates time and again, the Flannigan sisters stick together.
