Wow! Just, wow! That’s exactly what I thought when I finished reading Reign of the Marionettes, the first published novel by author Sheena Macleod. This book hooked me from the very first pages and kept me up all night, obsessively reading until the very end! Taking place during the reign of Charles the Second, the story follows the life of Countess Elizabeth Herbert as she does all that she can to keep her family safe from harm in a time when suspicion abounds and both political and religious unrest threaten all that many hold dear. When Elizabeth’s husband, William, the Earl of Powis, is accused of being part of a plot to overthrow King Charles and replace him with a Catholic heir, Elizabeth knows that she must use every bit of her wit and intelligence to stop what seems like his inevitable execution and the ruin of her family. But when she finds that there is a much deeper plot afoot, she realizes that her fight just might bring her up against one of the most powerful men in England. Who will prevail? You’ll need to read this excellent novel to find out!

I loved Reign of the Marionettes. Loved. It. How’s that for a review? Well, it is definitely how I felt about the wonderful offering by author Sheena Macleod. The story is compelling, well-paced, and filled with historical details that make it seem as real as it possible can. Author Macleod has done a masterful job at creating realistic characters that her readers will relate to, connect with, and truly come to care about. If that isn’t a hallmark of a great author, I’m not sure what is. Any reader who enjoys historical fiction, a story with lots of intrigue, or just an excellent work of fiction in general should absolutely read this book. I am so pleased to be able to highly recommend Reign of the Marionettes and I look forward to reading more from author Sheena Macleod as soon as I possible can!

“Reign of the Marionettes” is definitely a must-read for all fans of the historical fiction genre. Taking place in 17th century England it tells a riveting story of high society, intrigues, secret plots and power struggles between Catholic and Protestant noblemen, and the latter will stop at nothing to secure their rule no matter what the price.
Told mostly through the eyes of Lady Elizabeth Herbert – a Catholic noblewoman who still remembers the persecutions her family had been subjected to due to their religion – the story concentrates around the plot concocted by the Protestant lords, who dream of removing all Catholics from the Parlament, including the King’s younger brother, James. Even though Elizabeth wants nothing else but to live her life and take care of her family, her husband unwittingly gets entangled in the dangerous plot, which might eventually lead to his execution. And in the times when even the high court refuses to be impartial, and the King himself is fearing another Civil War, is it possible for the truth to be revealed after all? Read this masterfully crafted story and you’ll find out.
I definitely want to applaud the author for her meticulous research and authentic language. After turning the very first page I felt immediately immersed into a world of old England and sometimes I had to hold my breath while watching the events unfold in front of my eyes. Beautifully written and full of intrigue this novel should be on every historical fiction lover’s to-read list. Five stars.
