Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later by Angelina Assanti is a well-written memoir that discusses the realities of being a cancer survivor. Humorously, Angelina tells her story beginning with her experiences as a hypochondriac from birth and with lymphedema as a cancer survivor. She describes her healing journey, sharing experiences from both group and one-on-one therapy. She also includes a glossary of the different kinds of people cancer survivors could come across so they can mentally prepare themselves, questions to help them identify toxic people, and what type of therapy is right for them, among others. This book offers hope to those battling any terminal disease, especially cancer, and strength to survivors battling the aftermath of cancer treatment.

This book was absolutely amazing, and it got me so hooked that I experienced different emotions as I read. In one chapter, I would be feeling deep admiration for the author's strength and courage, and then losing my breath while laughing in the next chapter. I sincerely commend Angelina for her sense of humor, her exceptionally passionate writing, and for the courage to share her story to help those in similar situations. This book opened my eyes to the realities of cancer survivors and helped me develop deeper compassion and respect for them. Beyond the numerous things this book taught me, I learned to be a responsible advocate for my health, critically evaluate treatment options, and always seek help when needed. This book is organized, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. Themes featured include fear, humor, survival, and more. I recommend Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later by Angelina Assanti to all cancer survivors and anyone going through cancer treatment.

A decade ago, Angelina Assanti wrote her first book about her experience with cancer. Now, she shares new stories and reflections in Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later. She explains that she underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery as part of her treatment, but this disease doesn’t go away when treatment ends. Patients have to live with consequences such as pain, fatigue, and sleep problems, among other things. That’s why she shares her story and what she learned along the way. In her case, she tried group therapy, but it didn’t work for her. As she listened to others, she realized she didn’t have to absorb other people’s pain to validate her own. She discovered she didn’t need permission to heal in her own way, and that’s when she turned to her favorite tool for dealing with the topic: humor.

I loved Angelina Assanti’s anecdotes for their creativity and originality. This unique style shows in the chapter titles, which are puns based on movie titles. As she tells her stories, the author shows how humor helps us face uncomfortable situations that, when we analyze them more calmly, seem absurd or even ironic. Another detail I found interesting is that she explains things that aren’t usually mentioned elsewhere. For example, the danger of identity theft, people trying to sell their miracle cures, and other types of scams. I was also surprised that, even though she uses humor, she addresses profound topics, such as her experiences with other cancer patients she met. In Thank God I Got Cancer...I’m Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later, she reminds us that cancer patients deserve hope, but also honesty.

Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later by Angelina Assanti follows the author's cancer recovery story with humor and honesty. You would think beating cancer would mean the worst was behind her. Not exactly. Group therapy, run-ins with curious strangers, and the heartbreak of losing her pets kept life interesting and sometimes frustrating. Meeting fellow survivors in therapy wore her out emotionally, but it also pushed her to stand up for herself and set boundaries. She started figuring out how she wants to heal, her own way. Book events also brought odd characters, but some were normal and had inspiring stories. The author talks about her love of animals and losing her pets to cancer, and the devastating experience of Hurricane Ian that left her homeless and made her realize the hypocrisy in the system. Angelina talks about writing her books and her wild experience being on a TV show. She covers the obstacles she had to jump over. Life after cancer wasn’t easy. She dealt with the need to exercise, focus on eating healthily, and figure out how to live in a world flipped upside down by COVID-19. Somehow, she still managed to find laughs in all those setbacks.

Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later is a mix of comedy and real-life lessons. Angelina Assanti shows how you don’t just survive; you can actually thrive, connect with others, find purpose, and heal even when things get rough. She’s sharp at spotting toxic people, and when she sees negativity or fake kindness, she doesn’t hang around. She makes it clear she values her mental health, and you can’t help but respect that. The stories move fast. One moment she’s reflecting, the next she’s in the middle of another adventure. It keeps you turning the pages, wanting to see what she’ll do next. There is never a dull moment in this book. It will make you laugh and cry at the same time. The book addresses issues such as hypochondria, lymphedema struggles, and confronting fears like “scanxiety” (anxiety around follow-up scans) and social isolation. This is not just a memoir about owning one’s story of survival; it is also a great reminder that honesty and humor can be used as tools to confront taboo or difficult topics within cancer care and recovery.

In her memoir, Thank God I Got Cancer...I’m Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later, Angelina Assanti gives us a candid look at what it actually takes to survive a major illness over the long haul. She takes readers well past that initial celebration of finishing treatment to dive into what life looks like a whole decade down the road. Assanti opens up about the constant physical struggles she still faces, like the ongoing swelling from lymphedema and dealing with a surgically altered bladder that doesn’t give her normal warning signs anymore. She walks us through the constant anxiety of regular medical scans (a.k.a scanxiety), how frustrating it was when group therapy didn’t help, and the unfair expectations from people who assume you will bounce back instantly. Between grieving for friends she met in treatment, losing her beloved pets, and seeing her house ruined by Hurricane Ian, the author reveals exactly why you must set firm boundaries with toxic people and be on the lookout for cruel medical scams. In the end, her journey shows that real healing means reclaiming who you are through patience, standing up for yourself, and finding a way to smile even through the challenging moments.

In Thank God I Got Cancer...I’m Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later, Angelina Assanti offers readers a deeply moving memoir that will forever change how we view life after a huge medical-related trauma. The book’s greatest strength is how she seamlessly weaves humor into very heavy moments without ever undercutting her real grief. Her transition from a humor writer into health education and podcasting is a powerful testament to personal reinvention. Assanti also pinpoints systemic problems, like navigating medical bureaucracy and spotting fake charities. This adds real-world value to her book, lifting it far above a standard memoir. It’s truly inspiring to find a book that respects the complicated, twisting road to recovery while still giving readers clear advice on self-advocacy. For readers who want a realistic, witty look at getting through the permanent challenges of a major health crisis, this memoir is the perfect choice.

Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later by Angelina Assanti picks up the story a decade after her first memoir, once the treatment is over and everyone expects life to go back to normal. Except normal never really comes back. She looks at what those ten years actually held, not just the good stuff either. There's grief she wasn't expecting, friends she lost along the way, health scares that never fully went away, and the slower work of figuring out who she is once survival isn't the whole point anymore. Along the way, there's a hurricane that destroys her home, a rescue dog with an uncanny nose for illness, and a return to school that changes the direction of her life completely. It's less a cancer story than a story about what happens when life keeps throwing curveballs long after you thought the hard part was over.

Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore! 10 Years Later by Angelina Assanti is written with sharp, sarcastic humor that holds up even when the subject matter gets heavier. I haven't read Angelina's first book, but this one stands entirely on its own, and I never felt like I was missing context. Angelina doesn't shy away from the hard stuff, such as losing pets, friends, and her home, but she never lets any of it sit too long without cutting it with a joke, and that balance is what makes the book so readable. Each chapter is built around a movie title, which sounds like a gimmick but actually gives the book a fun structure that keeps things moving. What stands out most is how honest she is about the messy, unglamorous parts of survivorship that don't usually make it into recovery narratives. It's a book that teaches you as much about resilience and boundary setting as it does about cancer itself, and it's a useful read for anyone who has come through something hard and is still figuring out what comes next.
