Rings of Smoke, an intense thriller, is written by Diane O’Toole. John Fallon thinks his problems cannot get any worse after his mean-spirited wife abandons him and their children. But it does, as his daughter, Erin, goes missing when a serial killer is abducting teenage girls. John constantly reminds the puzzled police not to give up searching for his daughter, while trying to keep his sanity and family together. Leonard Fitch carefully selects his unsuspecting young prey. They have to meet a certain criteria to qualify for the hellish torture he intends to inflict upon them. He looks forward to seeing the terrifying looks on his victims’ faces, and can’t wait to see Erin’s when he pays her a visit at his secluded house of pain.

Rings of Smoke by Diane O’Toole is a spine tingling mystery that I enjoyed immensely. I have read many thrillers involving different types of serial killers, but Leonard Fitch’s freakish behavior is really bizarre. You can actually see the sequence of events as they occur, and feel the turmoil that John Fallon and other characters experience because it is a very emotional drama. The author gets into the killer’s head to show his reason for committing these crimes, while displaying other characters’ issues. She pays attention to details that will have you reflecting on things that were said or done in previous parts of the story. Diane O’Toole writes exceedingly well to create a nicely balanced story which is both suspenseful and heart-rending.
