Road to Peace is the sixth book in the Dogs of Fire series written by Piper Davenport. After the ultimate betrayal by a woman, biker Connor ‘Hatch’ Wallace had sworn off them all. Attending to a vehicle breakdown, however, lowers his guard when young widow Maisie Mann amuses him during the call-out. Hatch and Maisie go on a date, and Maisie is surprised to find Hatch a complete gentleman. When the date is interrupted, however, Maisie never wants to hear from him again; her failure to return his calls gets that message across loud and clear. A phone call from Maisie’s young daughter, Poppy, however, advising that ‘Mummy won’t wake up,’ has Hatch running on pure adrenaline as he calls his motorcycle brothers to action. Hatch’s investigations reveal Maisie’s truck’s brake line had been cut and the airbags shut off. The attempt on Maisie’s life shocks everyone, turning Maisie’s world on its head when the culprit is found. Hatch is determined to keep Maisie and Poppy safe at all costs. As he helps the family try to repair their shattered lives, the wall he’d built around his heart for so long dissipates, much to the relief of Hatch’s family and friends. Little does anyone know that the unthinkable is about to tear Maisie’s world apart.
The emotional tug-of-war written by Piper Davenport in this shocking (but addictive) tale is well-rounded, incorporating close friends and family in circles from both sides. The main characters are worlds apart, both in origin and life’s outlook, with one being British and the other from the USA. It was wonderful to see the two different languages blended in perfect timing; continuity in dialogue was not broken at all, with Hatch referring to Maisie as ‘mom,’ but Poppy referring to her as ‘mum.’ Two strong characters had different reasons for not wanting to get involved with one another, but fate intervened. Intense chemistry and destiny brought them together, creating the best mismatched couple I have seen in a very long time. Maisie’s insight into the true workings of a motorcycle club, discovering that they are family who truly care, and not criminals with low morals, was beautifully incorporated into the story. I enjoyed Road To Peace immensely and plan to seek out the rest of the books in the Dogs of Fire series as soon as possible. I recommend this book to lovers of romance tales which pack a punch, filled with humor, drama, action, suspense, tragedy, and a willingness to risk everything for the person you love.
