Ruminations is an eclectic collection of short stories, essays, and poems. Written over five decades, this fascinating anthology provides readers with moving observations on life by James Garrison, a Vietnam War veteran with a career background in law. Stranded at a remote outpost in the desert, three soldiers and a young native girl must find their way out with unknown threats amongst them. An advanced alien intelligence possesses the consciousness of a housecat to save a defense attorney from a dangerous encounter. In a dystopian future, a field researcher working for a biotech megacorporation discovers his company's real goals too late. White Guilt is a poignant poem about a person weighed down by the sins of their ancestors. Sunrise at Boot Camp follows a soldier trying to navigate everyday life at a military camp.
With a seamless combination of personal anecdotes, gripping short stories, and touching observational poetry, James Garrison delivers a captivating collection that gives you a lot to ponder. The author's essays draw a colorful portrait of his life experiences, while his short stories push the boundaries of your imagination, traversing different genres of speculative fiction. Garrison also touches upon some heavy real-world issues, such as racism, bigotry, corporate greed, crime, war, and more, with absorbing narratives that are thematically rich and emotionally rewarding. Using free verse, the author pens some mesmerizing observational poetry, with a prime focus on the themes but still leaving room for interpretation by readers. Ruminations is one of those anthology collections you will want to revisit. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't recommend it highly enough.
