Reggie: Life Is One Big Train Wreck by Reginald P Howard is part of the Mini Tales Collection, a funny look back at growing up as the fifth of six children in a busy family in the 1960s and 1970s. Reggie is dramatic, careful with his money, and fiercely protective of his lucky marble. His dad’s Lionel train set is kept safe in the closet, and Reggie treats it like treasure. Then his little sister, who always seems to get her way, asks to play with it. Along the way, there are strict parents, older brothers with big plans and no cash, competitive game nights, and a trip to the amusement park. What happens when the best toy in the house meets the baby girl of the family?
Reggie: Life Is One Big Train Wreck by Reginald P Howard is a funny, nostalgic read that works for kids and grown-ups alike. Reginald illustrates the book himself, and the cartoon faces add as much to the jokes as the words do. Each tale is short and complete, so it’s easy to read one at a time at bedtime or all in one sitting. The humor comes from ordinary family life: a boy convinced something is terribly wrong with him, a mom with a dry answer for every complaint, and brothers chasing the latest fads of the 1970s. The dialogue sounds like real people talking, which gives the family its own lively voice, and anyone with brothers or sisters will recognize the rivalry. There’s a gentle lesson about sharing and standing your ground too, without it ever feeling preachy. The vintage family photographs and author biography at the end are a nice touch, showing that the family in the cartoons is a real one. Great for parents and kids who enjoy a good giggle and a trip down memory lane.
