Say Mama by Mark Floyd is a heartwarming and tender story that follows a young child’s journey to finding their first words, focusing on the love and connection between parent and child. Through soft illustrations and a gentle, rhythmic text, the book captures the young child’s exploration of sounds and language as they move from giggles and babbles to forming their first word: “Mama.” This story beautifully reflects the universal experience of those early milestones, highlighting the joy and wonder of learning to speak, and is sure to resonate with parents and caregivers while delighting young readers. The repetitive structure and comforting cadence create a cozy atmosphere, perfect for shared reading moments celebrating a child’s growing curiosity and sense of discovery.

As an educator who has spent years reading with young children, I found Say Mama by Mark Floyd an absolute delight. The bright images will immediately catch any young child’s attention, and the simple, repetitive language makes it easy for them to join in. I love how the story invites little ones to recognize and celebrate a familiar and meaningful word, “Mama.” I’ve seen firsthand how children’s faces light up when they hear and say this word, especially in the context of a fun, engaging story. I also appreciate how the gentle, rhythmic pacing encourages participation and builds early language skills, making it an excellent resource for both classroom storytimes and shared reading at home. Say Mama offers both an engaging story and an opportunity to connect with children in a meaningful, joyful way. Say Mama will surely become a beloved addition to any young reader’s library, whether it's a first introduction to reading or a favorite book to revisit.
