Scars & Spirits by Della Dos Reis is the story of Katelyn, whose life is turned upside down when she learned that her husband is cheating on her. Heartbroken and stranded, she seeks refuge in a bar run by a bartender with a major attitude and a handsome face. Ash, a gorgeous and scarred bartender, is just what Katelyn needs in the midst of her heartbreak, and not because of his looks but because he challenges her and gets her out of her pity party. Katelyn embarks on a journey to find herself after her husband broke her heart, her trust, and her faith in herself, which takes her to Scandinavia, where she ends up renting from Ash’s grandparents.
Author Della Dos Reis has gifted us with a story of self-discovery, healing, and love. Scars & Spirits isn’t your average contemporary romance, but it was such a delightful read. Katelyn started out naïve and heartbroken but sassy, which I don’t think she realized until she met Ash, but then she became more self-assured as she learned from the mistakes of her past. The author does a good job with Ash’s character. He’s kind of an enigma, clearly smitten with Katelyn, but standoffish and hesitant. When the two are reunited, the story truly takes off, and we get to see Katelyn and Ash for who they really are, or maybe who they always were but didn’t know it yet. They are both scared but inextricably drawn to each other, making it impossible to stay away, and watching them fall was so much fun.
