Schrödinger’s Faith by Bob Seay follows Jonah, a weary high school English teacher navigating a huge personal and professional crisis in Memphis. His life is turned upside down when his school gives him a harsh choice regarding what he's allowed to teach—just when local politics start getting very intense. Seeking a distraction, Jonah answers a cryptic newspaper classified ad that introduces him to a brilliant but mysterious elderly woman named Helena. This strange mentorship pulls him into a hidden network of people who have walked away from mainstream societal expectations. When his new mentor is brutally targeted, Jonah is left stranded without a job and a broken car, forced to piece together a puzzle across the Deep South. Can he find a way to rebuild his life before everything crashes down around him?
Schrödinger’s Faith by Bob Seay is a fascinating literary tale that depicts how a tiny crack in a person’s worldview can shatter their reality over time. What really stayed with me through it all was how much I loved the older generation of characters who stepped in to guide Jonah, our exhausted lead, in the right direction. The author gives these folks a real presence, drawing on deep-seated generational pain, resilience, and a lifetime of real experience. I was mesmerized by the Deep South backdrop, from the dimly lit corners of a Louisiana music joint to an eerie drive across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The story moves at a natural, unhurried pace that keeps you invested in Jonah’s sudden money problems and emotional tailspin without ever coming across like a melodramatic sob story. It is an honest look at what it means to lose your safety net, look back at the past, and figure out who has been left out of the history books. It’s the perfect recommendation for readers who want a stimulating story about what happens when you finally decide to face the truth you’ve been avoiding for so long. Recommended.
