Daniel J Wright’s Bounty follows Soryn, a Dark Crystal Elf bounty hunter living in demon-ruled Ethorel. A human tracker leads him to Neriana, a woman who has survived fifteen years since the Demon King ordered humanity’s extermination. A living human is worth one hundred million Scheils, enough for Soryn to retire, so he binds Neriana and begins the journey to Evilar. Neriana has spent years hiding from demons and knows reaching the Demon King’s city will almost certainly mean death. Their route takes them through settlements where a human is not safe, while strange activity across Ethorel suggests something larger is happening. As the distance to Evilar shrinks, his certainty about the bounty begins changing alongside an attraction neither of them can easily ignore.
Daniel J Wright’s Bounty, book one in The Fated Bounty series, is a brilliant dark speculative fantasy and balances danger with romantic sizzle. The world-building is fantastic, with unique elements, like how Chamere's footsteps corrupt the ground and leave glowing trails behind them. Soryn is a real powerhouse, but even still, the ruthless bounty hunter has a protective side that comes through when he does things like form a crystal blanket over Neriana as she sleeps. Soryn and Neriana have plenty of chemistry, and we see their verbal sparring turn into unmistakable desire, particularly inside his old room at Dreadwater Cave. The fantasy is on point, from Waracour's blood magic that transfers injuries to Neriana to an Archdemon protected by nearly impenetrable armor. The pacing is full-steam ahead throughout, pushing further as the Demon King’s reach widens. Readers who are looking for dark fantasy with a sexy, dangerous romance will find it here. Very highly recommended.
