A cold case turns into a massive investigation when Christine Lynch begins to dig into the facts in Screams in the Woods by Michael R. Martin. The two men who are missing were investigating the mystery of a mine explosion over 100 years earlier that may have been deliberate. As Chris uncovers more information, though, the facts turn out to be much more complicated with talk of ancient civilizations and advanced technology that is unknown today. Things get a bit crazy when the boss wants to keep this a secret, a friend shows more than a passing interest, and thugs threaten Chris’s peace and safety. For every question that seems to have an answer, new complications arise and the answers seem even farther away. When it turns out that Chris can’t tell whom she can trust, she decides to go to the source of the mystery. Will that be a good choice or prove to be too great a risk?
For intense mystery with multiple levels of intrigue, Screams in the Woods can’t be beaten. Michael R. Martin has developed a highly complex plot covering an extended period of time during which many factors come together, leading to the present-day mystery. The main character, a strong and capable young woman, is immersed in a situation that requires all of her experience and courage, leading to an amazing conclusion that is a total surprise. Screams in the Woods is extremely well written and quite clever with diverse characters and plenty of imagination. It holds your interest from the first page and gives you plenty to think about, even after closing the book on the last page. Wonderful story!
