Can you imagine what it would feel like to be stuck all day indoors and never allowed to play outside with the other children? In Lori Keating’s A Heart for Eli, young Eli says he was born with a heart that doesn’t work very well. He’s waiting for a heart transplant to make him strong, but while he waits, he has to face the daily fears of what if and why he can’t play outside with the other children. His mom tells him he’s a superhero, but Eli doesn’t feel brave and strong enough to be a superhero. Most of the time he’s scared, and he cries a lot, but his mom says that even superheroes cry. How they brave the storm of tears makes them strong.

Lori Keating’s picture book, A Heart for Eli, honors the life of one little boy who had to fight this daily battle of living with a broken heart. The story is sad in many ways, but it’s also full of hope and courage for all the children (and adults, too) who meet the daily challenge of living with heart problems. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The author uses lots of dialogue between Eli and his parents, as well as with his healthcare workers. This helps move the story along as well as allowing young readers to really feel the fears that Eli faces daily. The illustrations are superb. This is an uplifting story to teach young readers what it means to have a heart transplant, and how to be strong and courageous even when faced with the worst fears. It’s also a powerful story about family and those who care for the sick. Based on a true story, this is a fitting tribute to one brave young man. Overall, a wonderful and emotional story.
