Secluded Summer at Hidden Havens by Wendy Black Farley is a romantic novel that readers will find intriguing. Benita Sotolongo needs a refuge from the hectic literary agency she inherited from her father and a dead-end relationship. She wants to recapture the carefree summers she spent with her aunt and uncle at the Adirondack Inn. Benita makes a last-minute decision to swap jobs and locations with a literature teacher. Maren Scott dreams of traveling and seeing the world she has only read about and takes Benita up on her offer; she heads to Miami for an adventure. Maren finds she loves her job, but just when things look bad for her job so does her new romance. Could there be a connection? Will Benita have to leave her rekindled flame before they have time to establish a relationship?
I love how authors intertwine things they are enthusiastic about within their novels. Wendy Black Farley is known for her wholesome books that keep the focus on the quality of the characters and a mysterious conclusion. Secluded Summer at Hidden Havens has several stories happening at the same time, but they flow smoothly from scene to scene. The characters are well-developed and distinct. The mistake that both Benita and Maren made when they left loose ends at their jobs adds a major twist throughout the novel. Overall, the novel is filled with detail and drama that made me feel like I was right there in every scene. I loved the fervent drive of the literature students and their creation.
