Shadows of the Past: The Damien Blackwell Chronicles by Lee Alexander is a suspenseful, thrilling take on the battle against demonic powers. Damien has inherited the family business. He is a demon slayer for hire. On one of his missions, he is injured by Noctherion the Blackvein. For various reasons, this demon manifesting in the physical realm alerts Damien that something seriously sinister is brewing. He must find out what they are planning, and more importantly, how to stop it. Fortunately, he has resources and people around him to help him. Leaders of the Christian, Islamic, and Jewish faiths team up to provide Damien with spiritual support. Additionally, he is well acquainted with Vivian Ambrose, a gifted healer, and Elanor Whithorn, a positive light magic witch. But will they be able to overcome the powers of darkness?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shadows of the Past by Lee Alexander. I like that the story was very reminiscent of a John Constantine comic. The occult lore throughout the novella is very intriguing. Aside from the main storyline, I was emotionally invested in Damien’s relationships. This is a short read, so I was impressed with how well developed all the characters were. For example, Elanor is only present in the story for a brief period, but I was able to relate to her on so many levels. The ending left me wanting to know more about everything and everyone. I think that this is an excellent start to The Damien Blackwell Chronicles. I highly recommend this novella to everyone interested in occult mystery stories.
