Sheyanne Follows Her Heart by K.L. Penaluna follows the love story of “Shy” and Lanny through the next phase of their lives. When Shy arrives in Arizona, she notices Lanny is evasive regarding who was on the phone. Sammi Jo is introduced as Glen’s date at a party but oozes hostility toward Shy. She discovers Lanny is trying to be a good friend to the emotionally damaged girl, but his failure to set appropriate boundaries could lead to a dangerous dependency. Hurt, Shy breaks off their relationship and dates handsome college mate Drew Carlisle instead. Will Shy and Lanny resolve things or move on with other partners?
Sheyanne Follows Her Heart by K.L. Penaluna explores several serious young adult issues and narrates a love story. The characterization is warm and engaging. I liked that Shy and Lanny followed their convictions and pursued their goals. Their relationship had survived a long-distance romance which created romantic tension for their reunion. The narrative made me hope to see the couple affirm their commitment as soulmates, yet curious whether Shy might explore other options. The plot conflict was complex enough to gain my sympathy even when I was frustrated by Lanny’s misplaced loyalty toward Sammi Jo. I approved of Shy’s attempts to set limits and was simultaneously worried by Lanny’s lack of boundaries in such a tricky situation. Sheyanne Follows Her Heart by K.L. Penaluna is the second installment in a romantic series, but it generates enough interest to read as a standalone book.
