In Nerina L Jones’s Floating, forty-year-old Nanette Marigold Pollo leaves her marriage and moves into a bedsit in Greysands, a seaside suburb of a city built on shifting gray sludge. After her government filing job gives way to computerization, Nan enrolls in an evening programming course, hoping to find a new way to support herself. She teaches herself to write software while doing whatever work she can find, eventually discovering that her skills may have a place in a rapidly changing industry. Her longtime friend Sheila offers companionship when the demands of earning a living threaten to consume her time, while her bond with younger sister Heather remains central to her life. Across the following decades, changing workplaces continually reshape Nan’s prospects, while the strange images inhabiting her private world take on a significance she cannot quite explain.

Nerina L Jones’s Floating is an excellent literary novel, with Nan the sort of protagonist you find yourself cheering on as she enters the computer age. Her resourcefulness is a joy throughout, springing from a determination to build a future on her terms. Just look at the lengths she goes to when she changes clothes between computer bookings under different names at Floating Library to finish the inventory program that could establish her career. Heather is finely drawn as Nan’s sister, whose elusive nature gives their closeness an unusual quality, even in something as ordinary as an untouched evening meal. The settings carry Nan gracefully through the decades, from the cobbled lane leading to her work at Tontrix to Precipice Library, where she teaches older learners. Readers who appreciate thoughtful literary fiction will be glad they picked this one up. Very highly recommended.
