Shirley Murley is a little girl who loves her faithful dog, Trevor. In Su Murley’s Shirley Murley and Clever Trevor, the twosome is inseparable as Trevor is the ideal four-legged companion. There are many things that this clever dog can do: he is good on walks, he doesn’t bite or bark (well, not too much), he stays by Shirley’s side while she reads, and he catches the ball whenever she tosses it. Not only are they good companions, but they are also best friends. Su Murley’s picture book is a lyrical treasure. Told mostly in rhyming verse, the author uses simple language and repeats words and phrases to encourage the beginner reader and improve their reading skills.
The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, and each illustration has a little extra something to attract the interest of young readers and make them look closer at the images. For example, there are hidden images within each image, like the dragonflies in one picture, a plane in another, some ladybirds, and even a train. There is so much fun to be had in studying the pictures while reading Su Murley’s story. The repetitive rhymes build up on each page, allowing the young reader to reflect on what they’ve already read and to recognize some of the words and phrases. Shirley Murley and Clever Trevor is a positive early reading adventure. Not only does it encourage young readers to learn about caring for and loving a family pet, but it also builds their reading skills as well as their ability to examine things more closely (like the images within the images). It also builds the positivity of quality family time with Mom, Dad, and the family dog. Overall, this is a lovely, happy, fun story.
