In Skating Home by Cynthia Hayes, divorced art teacher Nina Taylor is raising her three children in a small New York town when handyman Hank Miller arrives to remove chipmunks from her house and unexpectedly changes her managed life. Nina has spent ten years protecting her family after her former husband Jeffrey left, so letting another man become part of the household feels risky even as her relationship with Hank grows serious. Hank wants a place in Nina’s life, but Nina keeps their relationship separate from her children until circumstances begin drawing him closer. As Hank becomes involved with the family, Nina must decide how much room she is willing to make for a partner after years of depending only on herself.
Cynthia Hayes’ Skating Home is a warm, heartfelt story, and I am crazy about a cozy romance where a woman tries to make room for love inside family life. The romance itself is brilliant, loaded with all the push and pull we expect, with the bonus of flirting while cleaning paintbrushes. Nina is immensely likable—and busy! Her dedication to others sends her from a full day at school straight into evening landscape classes, where she helps adult students translate the world onto paper with charcoal. And then, there's Hank. The man with so much patience that he would take on a tree house project, and teach someone else's kid how to measure a window before cutting it. Hayes turns the settings and landscapes almost into characters themselves, from a Vermont farm that stretches past purple-fringed grass and on toward a glistening brook, all beneath autumn maples, to a lakeside home and its fieldstone fireplace surrounded by warm wood and glass doors. Well written and lovely, readers who enjoy romance will adore this.
