Snowflake the Christmas Beagle by Paul Hock relates the story of Snowflake, who was born along with four siblings on a farm on a cold winter's day. When he and the other puppies were old enough, people came to visit and took away three of his siblings. That left only Snowflake and his brother Grumpy. The two children had decided to keep them, so Snowflake was happy to remain in the home where he was born. He learned lots of things in his first year, such as chasing rabbits, making friends with the other farm animals, running, and having lots of fun. When his siblings returned for a visit, he learned that they had taken on special jobs with their fur-ever families. Beagles are clever dogs and they can do many interesting things.

Paul Hock’s picture book Snowflake the Christmas Beagle is a charming story. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow, the plot follows Snowflake during his first year of life. The author introduces young readers to beagles, sharing some interesting facts about this breed. There is a fun-fact page at the end with even more tidbits. The colorful illustrations help move the story along. By sharing stories of some of the fascinating things Snowflake’s siblings do, the author introduces young readers to therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and champion show dogs. The author also shares some intriguing facts about the origin of dogs. This is a most engaging and educational read.
