At bedtime, children sometimes feel afraid of being alone and of the noises they hear at night. However, they should remember that they are in a safe environment. To teach them this lesson, J J Darling shares Lucy Speckledot and the Nighttime Noises with us. Lucy is in her room, snuggling into bed and getting ready to sleep. Suddenly, she hears a noise at the window and gets scared, though she soon realizes it’s just a branch. Then she hears another sound in the hallway and worries again, so her mom comes over, sits beside her, and explains how to deal with the noises after noticing that the little girl is nervous. This way, Lucy learns to stay calm and remember that God is always watching over her.

I really liked the way J J Darling develops the story, because the interaction between mother and daughter is so lovely. Also, the short and rhythmic sentences are perfect for children learning to read. Each page includes a different question or activity to help children engage with the story. For example, on one page, readers are asked to take a deep breath along with Lucy; on another, they’re asked if they remember what to do if they hear a noise. The instructions are clear: stop your thoughts to stay in control, look around, remember that God is near, and trust in Him. I also liked the illustrations because they’re charming, with a cozy atmosphere, beautiful colors, and expressive characters. Lucy Speckledot and the Nighttime Noises will teach children to trust themselves and keep their faith in God.

Lucy Speckledot and the Nighttime Noises by J J Darling is a children's interactive Christian storybook that aims to teach kids about peace and trusting in God. Lucy goes to bed hoping for a good sleep. She gets scared when noises start. There is tapping from the window. A creak comes from the hallway too. She holds her bunny tight. Then her mother comes to her room to remind her about God's protection. Lucy takes a breath and puts her trust in God. Even after her mother leaves to sleep, Lucy stays peaceful. The wind rattles; there’s a soft “hoo-hoo” sound from outside, but she just squeezes her bunny and remembers she’s safe, and she’s not alone.

Lucy Speckledot and the Nighttime Noises is a story that comforts kids and reminds them they can lean on God when they feel scared. You can read it at bedtime, or just use it to help children handle their nighttime worries. J J Darling shares four simple steps—Stop, Look, Remember, and Trust—that kids can follow to settle themselves. The narration of the book is rhythmic, which gives it a perfectly soothing flow. It is also interactive. Kids get to point out the moon, cuddle up, and copy Lucy as she gets cozy for the night. The illustrations really look magical—full of starry skies, nature, and a warm bedroom that feels safe. Lucy herself is lovable, with her wide eyes and that cute toy bunny always by her side. This book is enjoyable and will help kids feel calm, safe, and at peace, wrapped in God’s protection.
