If you want action, suspense, excitement and thrills on every page, then Son of Syria by Ben Schafer is a must-read. Kyle Hoyek, aka Jirair, is the hero of the story, returning to his homeland to rescue Omar, Nadir, and his wife, Khamilah, Jamil and Azima (his childhood friend) with her young son, Hashim, and get them safely out of Syria. Damascus is in the middle of a civil war and each one in the group has a special reason for wanting to escape. The group soon finds themselves being shot at and having their plans destroyed at every turn. Kyle must figure out a new route to safety several times as the group is thwarted time and time again. Making matters worse, Jirair believes that one of the group may be a spy and feeding their plans to the enemy, making it impossible to reach their destination, but which one is a mystery.
Son of Syria is a story of danger and intrigue and impossible to put down. Every page is loaded with excitement that kept me on the edge of my chair. Ben Schafer is a talented and gifted author who has placed all of the right elements in all of the right places. I found myself rooting for Kyle and Azima to renew their romantic friendship, and constantly changing my mind about who was truly helping and who really wanted the mission to fail. I highly recommend Son of Syria and predict that it will be a top notch winner.
