Songs By Honeybird is a work of fiction in the drama subgenre. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Peter McDade. The book follows doctoral candidate Ben and his ex-girlfriend Nina in the aftermath of their break-up following Nina’s claim that she heard her dog speak. As Ben throws himself into his research of Honeybird – the first integrated rock band to form in Southern USA – and Nina’s spiritual journey sees her pursue the truth of how her father died, the secrets of the past could bring the two back together, or drive them apart permanently.
In many ways, reading this novel felt like I was getting two novels for the price of one as the journeys that Ben and Nina are undertaking could almost exist entirely separately from each other, but it is in those moments where their adventures cause them to cross paths that the story sparks and crackles beautifully. Author Peter McDade has created two engaging and grounded leads in Ben and Nina, each one a complex creature with a drive that sometimes pushes them together and sometimes pushes them apart. What I enjoyed the most about them was the dynamic way their characters evolved throughout the story as various discoveries and plot twists forced them to confront their worldviews. Overall, Songs By Honeybird is a beautiful story of personal fulfillment that constantly teases readers by flirting with the possibility of becoming a love story. It is an excellent read for all audiences and I heartily recommend it to all.
