Sophia Freeman and the Winter Behemoth by T.X. Troan follows Sophia Freeman to the Forbidden Land with instructions to deliver a journal to Wondnair for Gordimon. She meets an injured eeron, Ponnuke, learning of kidnappings by iron-masked guards before meeting Allen, who had allied with the enemy. Sophia shatters the barrier surrounding the god demon Tombermon by using spells, and Gordimon duels with Tombermon to lift the Eternal Curse. Sophia attempts to evacuate the hostages with Tim and Allen, requiring a trek through icy terrain and attacks from Levion and enemy forces. During their retreat, the group relies on Sophia’s Pouch of Secrets to reach Arbiter Nulon, using mechs and magic to defend against ambushes, infiltrate Scarlon’s fortress, and battle mind-control spells, and Sophia's preparation for a three-round contest as the Chosen One begins.
T.X. Troan’s Sophia Freeman and the Winter Behemoth delivers an outright whirlwind of adventure that thrills from the first page, kicking off the fourth book in the Sophia Freeman Series. I like that Sophia, Tim, and their allies stand strong in the face of relentless obstacles with courage, creativity, and teamwork, whether it is a magical confrontation or daring underwater escapes beneath frozen rivers. The story is bursting with fantastical creatures, inventive spells, and imaginative landscapes that transport readers across snow-covered hills, ice caves, and sunken seafloors. Troan does a great job of mixing fast-paced action with moments of clever problem-solving, allowing each character to shine through their actions and decisions. From mech battles to the clever use of the Pouch of Secrets, the storyline sparkles with excitement, keeping young readers on edge while celebrating friendship, bravery, and magical ingenuity in a world that, while often terrifying, is filled with promise.
