Spooks and Growls by Daniel Green is a charming monster-themed story that children and parents can enjoy together. A little girl waits at the window and makes sure that the doors are locked, as she knows that a variety of spooks and growls are heading to her house. These monstrous beings come in all shapes and sizes, with some big and some small, but what’s worse is that they’re searching for candy. The little girl begins to wonder what will happen if these spooks and growls consume too much sugar. She soon gets her answer with every giggle, every burp, and every mess the creatures make.

This silly story weaves humor and playfulness with each twist and turn, from eating lots of candy to tearing up furniture. This is the perfect Halloween treat, but the monster themes can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The writing is lively and full of energy from start to finish, with a humorous ending that will leave children laughing and wanting to read the story again. The story does possess some spooky fun, but the monstrous themes remain kid-friendly throughout and never get scary. Daniel Green’s writing is delightful, with word choices that will engage young readers with unique vocabulary. The illustrations by Mark Balita will make children laugh with perfectly ridiculous scenarios and humor that even adults will enjoy. Spooks and Growls is a kid-friendly monster story full of chaotic energy with humorous writing, silly monsters, and lots of spooky fun.
