Derek Chatman’s Southside Kings III: Retribution Season returns to South Jamaica, Queens, where former Roosevelt basketball standout Malik Carter has become part of the Southside organization. Bishop, the crew’s respected leader, agrees to a private meeting with Hilda Morales, a powerful woman whose dealings reach into a criminal network beyond the neighborhood. The encounter leaves Southside facing a threat whose source remains hidden. Malik’s cousin Red Carter wants swift retaliation as Diz, the crew’s numbers man, begins noticing irregularities in their business. Longtime friend Twin tries to keep the men together while uncertainty spreads beyond the auto shop they use as a base. At Carter’s Corner Market, Malik’s mother Barbara worries about her son’s increasing responsibilities. Malik has no way to contact those he trusts, so he must determine what group is trying to destroy Southside before the neighborhood suffers another loss.

Derek Chatman’s Southside Kings III: Retribution Season is outstanding urban crime fiction. The thriller is filled with intense scenes, like a driver refusing to unlock the doors as an angry passenger eyes three teenagers, and a suspect concealing shaking hands in a warehouse. That danger adds to the fleshing out of Malik, whose rare compassion shows when he listens to young worker Boogie’s fears about rent. I love Red, a fiercely protective man who has no problem confronting teenagers who romanticize Bishop’s reputation. It takes these men to face Southside’s calculating enemies, whose reach extends beyond Queens. As suspicion spreads, the settings become assets, from a rental car outside Linden Boulevard’s chicken shop to Fresh Cuts Barbershop, where clippers buzz through aftershave-scented air. Well written and wholly absorbing, readers who enjoy urban crime fiction will adore this.
