Author Sandra Sutter provides children and parents alike with an easy-to-read children’s picture book that captures the fun behind the annual scary October celebration of Halloween. Stan’s Frightful Halloween has outstanding illustrations by Chantelle and Burgen Thorne and some fun recipes in the back. Stan, the little werewolf who anticipates this holiday each year, has an unfortunate accident that curtails his participation in scaring folks on Halloween. Not one to let that stop him from trying to join in the scary fun, Stan tries a number of ways to tag along. Readers get swept along in Stan’s trials and errors and enjoy finally getting to celebrate Halloween with him.
Even before opening the book, readers will be drawn to Stan’s Frightful Halloween by an engaging front cover that silhouettes Stan against his scary-looking house. The illustrations invite readers to linger on each page, discovering vivid details in each picture. Chantelle and Burgen Thorne provide colorful scenes on every page of Stan’s journey as well as beautiful front and back covers and they made it simple for readers to inflect the correct emphasis on keywords by varying the font size and color. This design is both attractive and useful. And if the inside title page/back cover has you licking your chops for the array of Halloween treats displayed, you’re in luck! There are also recipes in the back of the book for preparing these goodies for your own Halloween party.
