Still Here by G.K. Woolf is set in the quiet town of Hartford, in New South Wales. The novel recounts the disappearance of ten-year-old Hattie Monetti, which occurred in 2003 while she was returning from school. The mystery of the missing girl becomes a cold case with a stream of suspects, no truth, and an ominous link with two other missing children in the nearby towns. Ten years later, in 2013, the Monetti family is composed of Hattie’s grief-stricken parents, Bruno and Dolly, and her older sister Anna, who was 16 when Hattie vanished. Anna is a teacher now who struggles with the memory of her missing sister and the curiosity of her students about the tragedy that hit her family. Over time, however, Anna realizes that Hattie's disappearance has deprived her not only of a sister, but also of the affection of her parents.
Devastated by the loss, the parents are focused on what happened to their little daughter, forgetting who is still here with them: Anna. Still Here is, indeed, the perfect title to describe the distorted dynamics that Hattie’s disappearance created in her family, between Anna and her parents. Written in the style of a diary, the novel is a gripping and fast-paced psychological thriller that G.K. Woolf has perfectly seasoned with balanced hooks and twists, catchy ingredients, and emotionally nuanced characters. Everyone might be a suspect, and deception disguises itself as normality. I hope a producer makes a movie based on this compelling and highly recommended novel.
