Suburban Luchador: Tales From the Burb Side is a humorous book of anecdotes which looks at the misadventures and triumphs of parenthood, as seen through the eyes of Philip Rivera. Almost reading as a father’s guide to potential parents, or even a man’s guide to fatherhood, Philip Rivera discusses the unexpected thrills, spills and chills of being a dad. Everything from emotionally supporting your very pregnant wife who goes into labor three weeks late to conducting submarine drills in a bathtub which has been torpedoed by large brown missiles (before performing an on-the-spot rescue mission) are covered in this hilarious book of memories and reveries which will tickle even the toughest funny bone.
Philip Rivera’s adventure-laden tales of being a parent had me mesmerized at each and every page (in between wiping away the tears of laughter). Written in such a manner which left incredible graphic imprints in my mind (the perfect book for Deaf readers such as myself), this book made me feel almost like I was watching Movie of the Year, as a dad tackles the everyday experiences of his wife and children in the most colorful manner. The chapter in which Philip introduces his young child to the wondrous, wintry world of an outdoor jacuzzi was brilliantly written, as was overseeing a child’s first soccer match, and more. I will be reading Suburban Luchador: Tales From the Burb Side again and again, as it easily lifted me from a somber mood, transporting me into a world of aching smiles and laughter. I wholeheartedly recommend this to all readers over 16 years, in answer to their questions about what life has in store for an unsuspecting parent.
